The City of Hanford, originally settled by the Southern Pacific Railroad, was incorporated in 1891 and quickly grew to become one of the bustling cities of the West. Established as the county seat for Kings County, the City has a 2009 population of 52,687, with an average growth rate of 2 to 3% per year. Growth is anticipated to increase to 54,286 in 2010 and 70,177 in 2020. Hanford has a diverse population that is largely comprised of people with white (64.1%), Hispanic (38.7%), and black (5.0%) ethnic compositions. According to the 2000 Census, 74.5% of adults over the age of 18 have their high school diplomas, 14.4% hold Bachelors Degrees, 3.9% hold Graduate Degrees, and 24.5% have some college or hold Associates Degrees.
